Sales receipt template
For goods sold and paid for on the spot: markets, pop-ups, workshops, private sales. Itemise what was bought and add your returns policy.
What a sales receipt is for
A sales receipt records a completed sale in one document: the items, prices, tax and how the customer paid. It is what a customer brings back for a return or warranty claim, so the date, item descriptions and your returns policy matter more than the design.
If the customer will pay later, send an invoice instead. If you only need to confirm a payment without itemising goods, a plain receipt is shorter.
Questions
What is the difference between a sales receipt and an invoice?
A sales receipt is issued when payment is made at the time of sale. An invoice is issued before payment and asks the customer to pay by a due date.
Do I need to show sales tax on a sales receipt?
If you charge sales tax, VAT or GST, show it. Enter the rate in Totals; tick “Prices already include tax” if your shelf prices include it.
