Cash leaves no bank trail, so the receipt is the only proof. This one has two signature lines, amount in words and a balance-due line.

Make cash receipts dispute-proof
- Write the amount in words as well as figures (tick “Amount in words” under Look). It is much harder to alter.
- Both people sign. The payer’s signature confirms the amount they handed over; yours confirms you received it.
- Say what it is for, e.g. “Balance on invoice INV-0142”, and show any balance still due.
- Number every receipt and keep a copy. The IRS expects you to keep records of cash receipts just like card payments.
In India, a receipt for more than ₹5,000 generally needs a ₹1 revenue stamp under the Indian Stamp Act, 1899 (Schedule I, Article 53); the rent receipt template has a stamp box you can switch on.
Questions
Should both parties sign a cash receipt?
It is good practice. The receiver’s signature is the essential one; the payer’s signature adds proof that both agree on the amount.
Can I make a receipt for a partial cash payment?
Yes. Enter the amount received as the line item and put the remaining amount in “Balance still due”.
