What goes on a bill of sale
- Seller and buyer names and addresses
- What is being sold, with identifying details: make, model, year, VIN or serial number, odometer for vehicles
- Price and date of sale, and how it was paid
- Whether it is sold “as is” (no warranty)
- Signatures and dates from both parties
Vehicles: check your DMV
A bill of sale is proof of the deal, but title transfer is handled by the state or national vehicle authority. Some US states publish their own form and may require it — California’s DMV, for example, uses form REG 135 — and a few require notarisation. Check your DMV before you hand over the keys.
Questions
Does a bill of sale need to be notarized?
Usually not, but a few US states and some transactions (such as certain vehicle or boat transfers) require it. Check your state DMV.
What does “sold as is” mean?
The buyer accepts the item in its current condition and the seller gives no warranty. Consumer-protection laws may still apply to dealers.
