What a rent receipt should show

Tenant and landlord names, the property address, the rent amount, the month it covers, how it was paid, the date, and the landlord’s signature. That is enough for most personal records and tenancy disputes.

Rent receipts for HRA in India

Salaried employees in India claim the House Rent Allowance exemption under section 10(13A) of the Income-tax Act and usually submit rent receipts to their employer. Two rules come up often:

  • Landlord PAN: CBDT Circular No. 8/2013 says the landlord’s PAN must be reported if annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000; if the landlord has no PAN, a declaration from the landlord is needed instead.
  • Revenue stamp: under the Indian Stamp Act, 1899, a receipt for more than ₹5,000 generally carries a ₹1 revenue stamp. It is normally applied to cash payments; tick “Show revenue stamp box” to leave room for it.

Rules change, and your employer may ask for more (a rent agreement, bank proof). Treat this as a document tool, not tax advice.

Questions

Can I generate rent receipts for several months at once?

Yes. Set the first month and the number of receipts (up to 12). Each receipt shows its own month and a numbered suffix.

Is the landlord’s PAN required on rent receipts?

For HRA in India, CBDT Circular 8/2013 requires the landlord’s PAN when annual rent is above ₹1,00,000. Below that it is optional.

Do rent receipts need a signature?

Yes, the landlord (or their agent) should sign. Draw or type the signature once and it appears on every receipt.
